If Only or Only If?

LIU Hsing-Yu
Solo Exhibition

"I was surprised to know that Hsing-Yu was going to hold a solo exhibition. Why would you want to hold a solo exhibition? To gain a credit?  While you has had so many exhibitions, this should be your first solo exhibition at the age of 36!"

"It doesn't matter if the work is sold or not, because you have a decent job now."

"When I see the paintings you drew when you were a child, I was reminded of how you painted back then. These paintings are just like the photos. The Dragon and Tiger Towers in Zuoying,  the Qingyun Palace in Xinzhuangzai. The whole family even went to camp in Maolin."

"When I was on the radio program, your father kept crying while listening to it. Many friends came to comfort and encourage him."

The above content is cited from LEE Hsu-Ji’s exhibition review from even before the exhibition is held. Same anticipation happens during pregnancy while there is already a lot of imagination and expectation before the child is born. Or before taking pills, our body prepares for the upcoming biological reaction. Can we gain the experience from gazing instead of viewing? Or is it a must?

LIU wants to discuss about the curatorship, creation and criticism and how they function in the art ecosystem. The exhibition features the artist’s childhood drawings that have been praised for their realistic appearance like photography, aligning with “My Father & Mother” a 10-year photography project representing LIU’s long trace upon his own family. A series of calligraphy notes have ben included as a practice of Re-presenting of this traditional art  and a form of self-mimicry.
